The top UFC light heavyweight makes his presence known again. Arman Tsarukyan revealed that he narrowly missed being at the historic gala at the White House. Ultimately, plans changed at the last straight.
In just a few weeks, UFC Freedom 250 will take place – an event that will go down in history as the first sporting event held on the White House grounds. The schedule includes Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje, among others, and the organization promised a true top-level spectacle.
However, not everyone shares this enthusiasm. After Dana White’s words about “the biggest card ever,” fans were hoping for even stronger names. A blockbuster fight between Topuria and welterweight champion Islam Makhachev was close to being finalized, but talks fell apart at a crucial moment.
In the background was the candidacy of Tsarukyan, who, according to many juxtapositions, may soon fight the winner of the Topuria vs. Gaethje clash. By his own admission, he was one step away from entering that showdown.
There was a theme of fighting Chandler. Tsarukyan reveals the backstory
Appearing on the PBD Podcast, Tsarukyan revealed that the UFC had contacted him about a fight with Michael Chandler.
– I had a phone call about fighting Chandler. But then they decided that it was not a good matchup for him. Especially considering that he represents the USA, because I would have beaten him 99.9 percent of the time. That’s why they chose Ruffy,” he said plainly.
– If something happens and Chandler or Ruffy drop out, they can still call me for a replacement.
Chandler has not had a good run lately. Since his impressive knockout of Tony Ferguson at UFC 274, he has failed to get back on the winning track. He is coming off three straight defeats, and in his most recent appearance he lost to Paddy Pimblett at UFC 314.
Now he faces another challenging clash – against the unleashed Mauricio Ruffy. But if the fight card goes sour due to injuries, Tsarukyan is already lining up to jump in at the last minute and save the event.
