After winning the championship belt, Belal Muhammad mentioned the names of several potential rivals. Now the champion has changed his mind and rejected a fight with the aging Kamaru Usman.
Belal Muhammad won the world title at the UFC 304 gala in Manchester. “Remember the Name” dominated Leon Edwards and took the UFC belt in the up to 77 kilogram category. Shortly after the victory, in interviews he mentioned the names of several fighters who were on his radar.
At the time, Muhammad included Kamar Usman among the contenders. Now apparently the Chicago representative has changed his mind, as in a recent interview with Kevin Iol, Muhammad named Shavkat Rakhmonov as a contender:
– A rival for me? Well I would prefer it to be Shavkat. He has an aura around him, and he is also invincible. If I beat him no one will accuse me of anything. If I take a fight with Usman, who has a series of three defeats in a row and is nearing the end of his career, everyone will complain. If we look at the situation in the division then Shavkat stands above the other fighters. I think Ian Garry will never challenge me to a fight himself, and I think Jack Della Maddalena is still injured. That leaves, then, Shavkat and Usman, of the two, a fight with the former makes more sense.
Later in the conversation, Belal Muhammad again referred to the person of Kamar Usman, the former welterweight category champion.
– It’s ridiculous. When he was champion he never mentioned my name. Every now and then he would say that this or that fighter deserved to fight for the belt. He didn’t mention me even though I had the best series of victories. He acted as if I didn’t exist. And now he walks around and throws texts like: “Who the fuck is he?”. He just doesn’t like the fact that he is no longer at the top, it’s hard for him to accept it.
