Bellator will be liquidated by the PFL, marking the end of the organization after sixteen years. This is not good news for the fighters.

The first gala of the Bellator organization was held on April 3, 2009. Led initially by Bjorn Rebney, the federation grew very quickly and already in its third year of operation organized, as many as 25 MMA galas.

The following years were not at all worse, with Bellator events fueled by tournaments and grand prix. Many excellent names have come through the organization over the years, and fans undoubtedly remember most the likes of Michael Chandler, Michael Venom Page, Patricio and Patricky Pitbull, Fedor Emelianenko, Ryan Bader, Eddie Alvarez, Douglas Lima and Ben Askren.

The PFL organization officially bought, acquired and literally absorbed Bellator in November 2023. Of course, discussions had been held months earlier, and while the terms of the deal were being finalized, previously scheduled events were taking place normally under a well-known name.

In 2024, the PFL organization dropped the numbering of Bellator events and renamed it the Bellator Champions Series. Ariel Helwani a Canadian journalist reported today that this will change in 2025. All indications are that Bellator has been abolished by the PFL.

The journalist pointed out that the upcoming gala is simply titled PFL Road to Dubai: Champions Series. Helwani’s attention was also drawn to the fact that only the championship belt remains of all Bellator branding. According to as yet unconfirmed information, Bellator champions are to be renamed/promoted to PFL champions.

The PFL developed these changes by abandoning the standard regular season format with groups. From now on, everything is to take place in a standard tournament format, so losers will be dropped from further competition right away. The main task of the tournaments will be to create talented players into new stars.

The biggest names who have previously competed at both PFL and Bellator galas are now expected to fight under one banner and hold the standard championship belt rivalry familiar from other MMA organizations.
