Demetrious Johnson is questioning the point of calling the UFC a sport. The former champion criticized the U.S. organization for making bad decisions when putting together fights.

Demetrious Johnson has defended the UFC championship belt eleven times in a row. The flyweight category fighter has made a permanent mark in the history of the American organization, although it should be noted that during his stay in the UFC he was repeatedly underestimated by those who manage the US hegemon.

Demetrious Johnson is another fighter who criticized the UFC for its decisions and said that’s why it’s hard to call it a sport. DJ invited Lerone Murphy to his podcast and during a conversation with the Englishman he negatively evaluated the UFC’s decision to put together the Volkanovski vs Lopes 2 fight.

Demetrious, during an interview with Leron Murphy, said that in his opinion it was the Englishman who deserved a championship skirmish with Volk.

– Everyone thought that you Lerone would be the one to fight for the belt…. Meanwhile, the organization chose a guy who already had his chance and lost the duel by rounds 4 to 1. For me, Volk dominated Lopes. Later Diego got a fight with Jean Silva, he won but it was a battle and Lopes was wired in it, there were sharp exchanges. One such fight won and he gets another chance to fight a title fight…. I do not know why this happened, was it decided by his popularity? Or maybe he sells a lot of tickets, I don’t know.

Demetrious Johnson alluded to the fact that, lately, matchmakers and the organization’s head honchos have been focusing on putting together the most popular fighters, rather than bringing the fighters who are the highest ranked.

– Are we doing a popularity contest or are we doing it to see who is better? That’s why I always question the sense and validity of calling the UFC a “sport.” That’s why I always say it’s not a sport just selective picking. It works on the principle of: “We’ll give this fighter because he’s from a market we care about and we want to expand and put down roots there.” Ok let it look like that, just don’t pull the wool over our eyes.

DJ has thus joined Khabib Nurmagomedov, who also criticized the world’s top MMA league a few days ago.
