Dominick Cruz has ended his professional career after suffering another serious injury, the former UFC champion admitted that he has put all his strength into the sport for 25 years.
Dominick Cruz began his adventure in combat sports 25 years ago. Cruz first trained, of course, and recorded amateur starts. Few people are aware that Cruz first trained in wrestling. It was in this sport that Dominick competed in high school and, thanks to his athletic performance, had a great chance to win a scholarship at the University of Northern Colorado.
Unfortunately, in Cruz’s final year of high school, bad luck struck for the first time and he suffered an injury that caused him to have to say goodbye to the aforementioned scholarship. Before Cruz started competing professionally in MMA he studied at a community college to become a firefighter, while he was also a customer service employee at Lowe’s.
Fortunately, Dominick Cruz didn’t give up on the sport completely and made a successful MMA debut in 2005, and fought for the WEC belt against Urijah Faber back in March 2007. Cruz failed to reach for the title however he did so three years later. Dominick later bit back Faber’s defeat by beating him twice in the UFC octagon.
At the height of his career, Dominick Cruz boasted a series of thirteen straight wins, which included victories over such fighters as Joseph Benavidez, Demetrious Johnson and TJ Dillashaw. Cruz was a WEC and UFC champion.
Dominick Cruz has announced the end of his career after sustaining an injury while sparring ahead of his farewell fight at the UFC gala in Seattle. The dominator issued a special statement to fans.
I have put all my strength into this sport for the last 25 years. I really believed in one last fight however unfortunately two shoulder dislocations in 8 months meant that your guy has to end his career.
I gave everything I could during these preparations. I’ve really focused on fitness and strength for the past year. However, sometimes the body doesn’t want to cooperate. The pain is no longer so great after the shoulder is set, however, the second dislocation is more complicated than the first.
This sport is everything to me, it has helped shape me into the man I am today. I thank the UFC for building the platform and all that makes it possible for me and other fighters to perform at the highest level.
I am very grateful to all of you who bought tickets for fights, booked hotels and plane tickets just to support me. Thank you for being with me in all those moments of challenges and victories. You are the ones who made this an unforgettable journey. Thank you for the love and support that will stay in my heart forever.
