Dricus Du Plessis appeared at the UFC 328 gala, where he watched the fight of the evening between Sean Strickland and Khamzat Chimaev from up close. Afterwards, there was no shortage of his commentary on the course of the duel.
The clash, which took place in Newark, aroused great excitement from the start. Before the fight, many wondered whether Strickland would be able to successfully defend his takedowns and force Khimaev into a standup fight. In the end, that’s exactly what happened – the American imposed his conditions, and the duel was settled in his favor by a non-unanimous decision of the judges, reaching his second career middleweight title.
After the fight, Du Plessis was asked via UFC social media about his opinion. His answer was specific, and his final comment – quite telling.
“Yeah, so the fight went exactly the way I thought it would,” du Plessis said. “Great, great fight by Strickland. Like I said, it’s so hard to keep that man on the ground. He is incredibly tough to hold on, and he made Khamzat tired. That’s exactly what happened. Like I said, in the standup, he just won’t be able to hang with him. So, congratulations. I guess this makes me world champion again.”
It is worth recalling that “Stillknocks” lost his middleweight belt to Chimaev in August 2025. Before that, he defeated Strickland twice on points cards. Nevertheless, a quick trilogy matchup at this point seems unlikely, especially since the newly crowned champion is targeting a rematch with Nassourdine Imavov.
