In recent weeks it seemed that it was Khamzat Chimaev who was closer to a championship fight with the African, however today it was unexpectedly announced that Dricus Du Plessis will fight a rematch bout with Sean Strickland.
Dricus won the championship belt just in his first fight with the American. Du Plessis then defeated his rival after a non-unanimous decision by the judges. Strickland loudly expressed his dissatisfaction with the verdict, suggesting that he should have been the winner.
Since their first fight, both Du Plessis and Strickland have had one fight each. Dricus Du Plessis defeated Israel Adesanya by submission at UFC 305 in Perth. Sean Strickland won in June against Paulo Costa after a judges’ decision.
The Du Plessis vs Strickland 2 fight has been contracted for five rounds, and will be for the middleweight championship belt. The rematch of the top fighters in the up to 84 kilogram division will take place on February 8 at UFC 312 at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney.
