Dustin Poirier hinted at a potential date and location for the last fight of his career. Diamond commented on rumors of a possible clash with Paddy Pimblett.
Dustin Poirier fought his last fight in the UFC in June when he lost to Islam Makhachev. More months passed, and little is known about the American’s return to the octagon. Poirier was a guest on Jim Rome‘s podcast, where he revealed a bit of information about where and when he would like to end his career.
– I’m still thinking about it, together with the UFC we’ve been working on it for several months. I came up with the idea that I would love to finish my career in Louisiana, the place where it all started. The UFC hasn’t been here in the last 10-11 years, so to bring them to my state and lay down the gloves in the octagon would have great meaning for me. I believe it can happen, I believe we are close to it. Nothing is confirmed yet, but it could happen in the vacations.
Dustin Poirier admitted that he was surprised by the reaction of UFC staff. Diamond expected that his suggestion might not be taken into account and quickly disposed of, however, it turns out that the UFC’s management brass wants to implement the lightweight division fighter’s plan.
– I’ve been in the UFC for many years, we’ve done a ton of business together. I honestly thought that if I came to them with an idea they would immediately reject it because they hadn’t been here for a long time. Their reaction was very positive, they liked the idea. They said they would contact people in Louisiana, representatives of the city of New Orleans, and make it happen.
It seems that the ideal venue for the UFC gala is the Smoothie King Center, the 18,000-seat arena of the New Orleans Pelicans, a team that plays in the NBA basketball league. The holiday date mentioned by Dustin fits perfectly into the calendar for these games, as they end in June and the next season doesn’t start until October. This means that the arena should be available to the UFC just in time for the vacations.
Dustin Poirier was asked about potential rivals he would like to face. Diamond immediately gave one name.
– Justin Gaethje, we have a balance of 1-1. I beat him, he beat me. That was the first name that came into play as the idea of fighting in Louisiana came up. I know he has a fight booked with Dan Hooker for March. I’m a fan of both fighters and I’m sure it will be a war that fans won’t want to miss.
The American was asked a question about a clash with Paddy Pimblett, about which there are rumors. Poirier quickly crossed out the chance of such a career-ending bout.
– This is an interesting fight, however, not for the last fight of my career. My last fight, well I’m only considering legends in it. We have some names and we are working on it.
