The former UFC champion is not a fan of Ilia Topuria’s decision to switch to a higher division. Matt Serra believes that the Georgian should still wait with it.
Ilia Topuria surprised fans at the beginning of the year and made the decision to change to a higher weight category. Some current and former fighters applauded the idea while there were also a few who said it came too soon.
Matt Serra was a guest on the Overdogs podcast, where he spoke on Ilia Topuria’s decision to vacate the UFC featherweight belt and move to the lightweight division.
– It will be interesting to see him in the lightweight category however I would still like to see him fighting in the featherweight division. Of course he had big wins over Alex Volkanovski and Max Holloway however I think he went a little too soon to a division higher up.
Matt Serra believes that there were still interesting challenges for the Georgian in the featherweight category. The veteran even pointed out a specific name.
– It’s not that I don’t give him a chance to win the lightweight belt, it’s more about the fact that he could clear the division, fight fight fighters like Diego Lopes or other contenders. Later, in glory, he could go higher.
