Has Mateusz Gamrot lost his chance for a big rematch? Beneil Dariush, the former rival who defeated the Pole is ready to switch weight categories.
Beneil Dariush has not fought a single bout in the UFC in 2024. The American first forcibly rested after his defeat to Arman Tsarukyan, and then found himself in an uncomfortable situation, as he was overlooked not only by matchmakers, but also by potential rivals.
Dariush dropped in the rankings and it was difficult to challenge other fighters. Of course, several times in the past Mateusz Gamrot has been snookered for a rematch with the Kings MMA fighter. Unfortunately, it seems that such a skirmish is unlikely to happen.
Beneil Dariush spoke candidly about his situation during an interview with Inside Fighting.
– It’s very difficult and just weird, you know? I know everyone has ups and downs. I was on an upward wave for a while, and now I’m kind of down. But it’s just strange that I can’t fight back.
Beneil Dariush has openly admitted that he considered moving up to the 77 kilogram category. The American does not think that he would permanently end his starts in the lightweight division, however, he wants to return to the UFC octagon properly recuperated after a knockout loss.
– I even considered moving up to welterweight so that I could fight more often. I don’t think I’ll end up at lightweight, and I’ve been trying to focus entirely on recovery in terms of brain injuries and such. I want to make sure that when I return to the octagon, I won’t have to worry about any of those things.
Of course, there are always chances that the situation as far as the health and availability of fighters is concerned will work out in such a way that it would be most sensible to match Dariush against Gamrot. For the time being, however, the priority for fights with both the American and the Pole seems to be with fighters who have not yet fought them.
