Gegard Mousasi has filed a lawsuit against the Bellator and PFL organizations. The experienced fighter, who was Bellator champion, is demanding huge compensation.

Gegard Mousasi is undoubtedly one of the living legends of European MMA. Mousasi was a champion of the Dream organization, Strikeforce, and also twice reached for the championship title, Bellator organization, which he then successfully defended.

Mousasi considers himself disadvantaged after the PFL merger with Bellator. The Professional Fighters League organization bought out Bellator while capturing the contracts of many fighters. Among the fighters to move from Bellator to the PFL was Gegard Mousasi.

The Dutch representative never got the chance to debut in the cage of the PFL organization. Mousasi demanded fights from his new bosses and complained that the latter did not want to organize a fight for him, as his contract guarantees him a lavish payout. The Americans didn’t take Gegard’s open criticism well and fired him in May this year.

Mousasi has decided to file a lawsuit demanding huge compensation. The former champion wants the PFL and Bellator organizations to pay him $15 million. Attorneys representing Mousasi cite as one of the main reasons for the lawsuit the fact that the Dutchman was bound by an important contract that guaranteed him a specific salary. PFL owners wanted to renegotiate the contract, claiming that Mousasi was not selling PPVs, was no longer a champion and was not attracting fans in front of TV sets.

The whole affair seems to be highly convoluted, as MMA organizations have repeatedly dismissed fighters with valid contracts in the past, and it’s basically futile to find situations in which fighters have claimed compensation. To Mousasi’s disadvantage is the fact that he is 39 years old, has lost his last two fights and is inevitably approaching retirement.

The amount that Mousasi cited in the lawsuit is horrendously high, it seems that it would be hard for the fighter to get a million dollars in compensation, let alone the fifteen he is demanding. We will keep you informed of developments in future news.
