UFC legend Georges St-Pierre shared his thoughts on the upcoming fight between Islam Makhachev and Ian Machado Garry.
In the main event of UFC 330, Islam Makhachev will defend his welterweight title. His opponent will be Ian Machado Garry, who has been waiting for a title shot for quite some time. Although many experts consider the Dagestani fighter the clear favorite, the Irishman has repeatedly proven that he can give the division’s top fighters a run for their money.
Garry Machado has the skills to pose a threat to the champion, but title fights follow their own rules. Especially when one of the best fighters across all weight classes is standing on the other side of the octagon.
Georges St-Pierre spoke about the upcoming bout. The former UFC champion and one of the greatest fighters in welterweight history analyzed the strengths of both fighters.
– I think it’s going to be a good fight. Ian Garry is a very tough opponent and an excellent striker. Islam, on the other hand, will, as always, want to take the fight to the ground. If he manages to do that, he’ll have the advantage. If, on the other hand, Ian Garry manages to keep the fight standing, then he’ll have the advantage. It promises to be a really interesting matchup,” St-Pierre said in an interview with MMA Junkie.
The Canadian, however, believes that the current champion has a stronger case for victory.
– ” Islam has the edge in terms of skill because he’s a more well-rounded fighter. He can fight in every area, and his grappling stands out in particular. That’s exactly what he’ll want to capitalize on,” GSP said.
St-Pierre also ventured to predict what the future holds for the Dagestani fighter. According to him, it’s possible that after a potential title defense, Makhachev will try his hand at an even higher weight class.
– “Perhaps in the future he’ll move up to the middleweight division and try to become the third-division champion,” added the former UF champion
