Tom Aspinall’s prolonged absence is beginning to irritate the UFC’s top heavyweight fighters more and more. Waldo Cortes-Acosta commented very sharply on the champion’s situation and suggested that the British fighter is avoiding a rematch with Ciryl Gane.

Undisputed UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall remains sidelined following a series of eye surgeries. His health issues stem from his fight against Ciryl Gane at UFC 321 last year.

The bout ended as a no contest. Just a few minutes into the fight, Aspinall was unable to continue after the Frenchman accidentally poked him in the eyes several times with his fingers.

Initially, there was hope that the British fighter would return to the Octagon in September. However, the champion has still not received medical clearance to compete again. Dana White, meanwhile, has made it clear that if Aspinall’s absence is significantly prolonged, the UFC will have to move forward with the situation at the top of the heavyweight division.

In the meantime, Gane has won the division’s interim title. However, it is still unclear when his rematch with Aspinal might take place.

Waldo Cortes-Acosta Speaks Out Sharply About Tom Aspinall

Waldo Cortes-Acosta, among others, is starting to lose patience. During a press conference ahead of UFC Noche, the fighter was asked whether he thought the organization should strip Aspinall of his championship title.

“Yes, it’s very frustrating to see a champion in a situation like that, ” said Cortes-Acosta.

The Dominican believes that Aspinall should return as soon as possible and face Gane again. He expressed his opinion in an exceptionally blunt manner.

– He knows he has to come back and fight Cyril Gane. I think he’s an a**hole. He’ll still have plenty of time to recover and then get back in the running for the title, but he’s not a champion. To me, he’s not a champion.

Cortes-Acosta went even further, accusing the British fighter of lacking the character befitting a champion.

“ A champion is someone who faces a problem, solves it, tries to make a comeback, fights, and is a warrior—not a p…head. I don’t know where he is. Maybe he’s trying to hide because he doesn’t want to fight Cyril Gane, ” he said.

Cortes-Acosta isn’t the only fighter who is unhappy with the current situation in the royal division. Earlier, former two-weight champion Henry Cejudo also suggested that Aspinall should relinquish his title if he is unable to return to competition.

For now, the future of the championship remains unclear. Aspinall continues his rehabilitation, Gane holds the interim title, and more and more fighters are speaking out, demanding that the UFC make a decision and stop blocking the heavyweight division any longer.
