Islam Makhachev weighed in on the discussion about Jon Jones and his place in UFC history. The current welterweight champion does not intend to downplay the American’s athletic achievements, but believes that “Bones” has, over the years, shirked responsibility for his problems outside the cage far too easily.
Jon Jones once again defended his position in the debate over the greatest fighter in UFC history following more comments from Daniel Cormier. “DC” has long emphasized that, in his view, his former rival’s numerous doping violations, among other things, speak against him.
People often recall the situation leading up to UFC 200, when Jones’s planned rematch with Cormier fell through after he tested positive in a doping test.
In the GOAT debate, Cormier points first and foremost to Khabib Nurmagomedov. His longtime teammate Islam Makhachev, who has won championship belts in various weight classes, also has an increasing number of arguments in his favor.
Jones recently mocked Cormier’s comments on social media and, at the same time, encouraged Makhachev to continue his current winning streak. The Russian decided to respond, though his reaction was definitely not friendly.
Makhachev to Jones: “You’re never the one to blame”
Islam Makhachev responded to Jones’s comments via X (formerly Twitter). He noted that he did not want to undermine the American’s athletic achievements, but pointed out his history of disciplinary issues.
“Jon, I’m not trying to downplay your achievements in any way. But it seems like your whole life is, in one way or another, tied to breaking the rules,” Makhachev wrote .
– And yet, somehow, you’re never the one who gets blamed for it.
Jones had previously questioned Makhachev’s claim to be the greatest fighter in history, pointing out, among other things, his knockout loss early in his UFC career.
Since then, however, the Russian has put together an impressive winning streak. At UFC 330, he defeated Ian Machado Garry and surpassed Anderson Silva’s record-breaking winning streak in the organization.
As of this writing, Jones has not yet responded to Makhachev’s taunt. “Bones,” however, is set to appear this weekend at UFC 331, where he will be in Gable Steveson’s corner during his next heavyweight bout.
The debate over who is the greatest fighter in UFC history clearly isn’t going to end anytime soon. Jones believes that Makhachev still has a lot to prove before he can truly be considered among that elite group. The Russian himself, however, makes it clear that when evaluating “Bones’s” career, he has no intention of overlooking events outside the Octagon.
