Joe Rogan gave a behind-the-scenes update and revealed what kind of payout Jon Jones expects for his championship fight with Tom Aspinall.
The situation at the top of the heavyweight category has been clear for quite some time. Jon Jones is the current champion of the UFC organization while Tom Aspinall won the interim championship belt. The problem is that the American isn’t very eager for a unification duel of the belts.
Jon Jones in recent weeks has floated various theories about why he should not fight Tom Aspinall. From the suggestion of an age difference, to the Englishman’s alleged lack of respect, to his desire to fight a duel with Alex Pereira.
Jon, however, beyond all excuses, made it clear, he is willing to enter the octagon with Aspinall if the UFC organization pays him so much money that he doesn’t have to worry about a championship belt or furthering his career.
Joe Rogan has revealed what amount Jones expects. It turns out that the heavyweight division champion wants from the UFC, as much as $30 million.
– There is talk behind the scenes that he wants $30 million. I hope the UFC will pay him that much.
It seems highly doubtful that Dana White and company would want to put up such an astronomical sum to pay a single fighter. Moreover, it is safe to assume that the UFC organization alone would not want to pay even half of that.
Of course, there is the possibility of holding such an event in Saudi Arabia where the lion’s share of the fighters’ payouts would fall on the shoulders of the sheikhs. Here, however, another problem arises, because organizing an event with a heavyweight championship fight in the United States gate receipts should be around $20 million. One must also keep in mind to find the golden mean when it comes to the broadcast hours of the event.
The case itself is highly complicated, and Jon Jones’ demands could significantly thwart the UFC’s plans and make the duel so severely postponed that the American will eventually end his career without fighting Tom Aspinall.
