Ilia Topuria is still recovering from the first loss of his professional career. Joe Rogan believes the former UFC champion can still make it back to the top, but he warned him against returning to the Octagon too soon. He cited Alexander Volkanovski as an example.

Ilia Topuria hasn’t fought since his shocking loss to Justin Gaethje at UFC Freedom 250. “El Matador” had to concede defeat to his opponent for the first time in his professional career and decided to take a break from competition. However, it’s possible we’ll see him back in the cage before the end of the year.

The fight against Gaethje took a heavy toll on Topuria. After leaving the White House, his face looked completely different from how it had before the fight. “El Matador” took a barrage of hard blows and, among other injuries, suffered fractures to his orbital bones during the bout.

After such a devastating performance, questions arose as to whether Topuria would be able to return to the top of his game. Joe Rogan isn’t writing off the former champion, but in his opinion, the most important thing now will be to take a patient approach to his comeback.

Joe Rogan warned Topuria. “Many great fighters have made this mistake.”

The topic of “El Matador’s” future came up in an episode of *The Joe Rogan Experience*. Rogan focused primarily on the extent of the injuries Topuria sustained in his bout against Gaethje.

“It’ll be interesting to see how he recovers from this, because he took a lot of damage,” Rogan said.

– Two broken eye sockets; they had to stop the fight between rounds, and he was taking massive punches from a guy who’s got f***ing rocks for fists. Justin can really pack a punch… It’s been a few months now, but it’ll probably take about six months before he even starts sparring again.

According to the UFC commentator, the biggest threat may be the desire to make up for lost time too quickly. In this context, Rogan recalled the story of Alexander Volkanovski.

“ A lot of fighters—a lot of truly great fighters—have made the mistake of coming back too soon, ” Rogan continued. “ Volkanovski is an example I bring up all the time, and you could argue he’s the best featherweight fighter in history.” It was crazy. He took a full-force kick to the head—a shin straight to the skull—got knocked out, and four months later he fought the f***ing most dangerous contender he’d ever faced.

Rogan was thus referring to Volkanovski’s decision to make a quick return after a brutal knockout. In his opinion, Topuria should avoid a similar scenario and give his body enough time to fully recover.

“El Matador” remains one of the biggest names in the UFC, and there will certainly be no shortage of attractive options for him upon his return. First, however, according to Rogan, he should make sure to return to the Octagon only when he is fully healthy.
