Jon Anik has revealed a possible date for a fight between Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall, in which the heavyweight championship belts will be unified.
Jon Jones defended his UFC heavyweight championship belt by knocking out Stipe Miocic with a spinner. The American both before and after the fight said he would like to fight Alex Pereira now.
However, both Dana White, the president of the UFC organization, and other key personnel of the world’s best MMA league do not want this duel. White and company want to bring about a Jones vs Aspinall duel.
Jon Anik, a commentator working for the UFC, who had the opportunity to speak with Jon Jones after the New York gala, spoke on the matter.
– I don’t have any information from the UFC office, but you can call it informative speculation. Me, I believe that this fight will happen. I had a chance to talk to Jon Jones after the gala, I think he was misunderstood by this interview right after the fight. He simply preparing for the fight with Stipe had only this fight in his mind, he wanted to focus on the upcoming fight.
Jon Anik believes that Jon Jones will not fight Alex Pereira. The commentator said that the UFC will bring Jones to fight Aspinall however they will have to offer the heavyweight champion a suitably large payday for the fight.
– This is a fight. Even though Jon Jones is not a natural heavyweight, he doesn’t have the dimensions of Tom Aspinall. I know that Jones will not fight Alex Pereira. Jon will fight Tom Aspinall.
– Everything will depend on the money, on the offer Jon Jones expects. The UFC organization needs to assess the American’s value as a champion. Is he worth it to pay him $25 million per fight? You know a bit like pricing the value of another star, for example Michael Jordan. How much will we pay the best fighter in history. I think the UFC is now in a great negotiating position, and above all in a good financial position to arrange the fight.
At the very end, Jon Anik revealed a potential date for the Jon Jones vs Tom Aspinall fight. The commentator expects that the clash unifying the heavyweight championship belts could take place in the summer of 2025.
– I think it will happen this summer in Las Vegas during International Fight Week 2025.
