Jon Jones has made the decision to end his professional career. Tom Aspinall has been promoted to full UFC champion in the heavyweight division.
Dana White surprised journalists and fans with the information he gave at a press conference after the UFC gala in Azerbaijan. The director of the world’s best MMA league said that Jon Jones called him yesterday and conveyed that he was ending his professional career.
White pointed out that this means Tom Aspinall is a full-fledged champion, not an interim one. The Englishman will therefore defend the proper, main championship belt at his next appearance. For the time being, we do not yet know the date of Aspinall’s next fight.
Jon Jones has been fighting in the UFC organization since August 2008. The American has a number of big wins to his credit, and before moving up to the heavyweight category he was the champion of the welterweight division for a ragtag amount of time. However, it must be remembered that Jon had fought just two fights in the last five years and was clearly getting ready to hang up his gloves.
Tom Aspinall was quick to react to Jon Jones’ retirement. The Englishman wrote on Instagram after being promoted to full-fledged UFC champion.
– Time to rock the heavyweight division for fans. An active full-fledged UFC champion.
So it looks now as if we will have to wait a bit for the announcement of the Englishman’s next fight. There are several interesting names at the top of the category although it’s hard not to get the impression that the top ten lacks fresh blood.
