Jon Jones is not going to accept a fight with Tom Aspinall. The UFC heavyweight champion explained his decision ahead of the UFC 309 event.
Tom Aspinall has been pushing hard in recent weeks for a duel with the winner of the evening’s fight at UFC 309. The interim UFC champion deserves such a clash like a dog. While Stipe Miocić has stated that if he beats Jon Jones he will not be opposed to fighting Aspinall, Jon Jones does not intend to fight the Englishman.
Jon Jones, 37, said that Tom Aspinall has repeatedly made negative comments about him. In a lengthy statement during the media day, Jon Jones explained why he does not want to fight the interim champion.
– If I am to be completely honest, it seems to me that all this time Aspinall has been acting like a total d**k. His fans are annoying and he easily gives in to their narrative. He’s 31 years old and he’s from that generation of influencers who sell their T-shirts online and do that kind of thing. I’m long past that. Boy if you showed me some respect then we would probably get along. Now I just don’t want to do business with you.
– At the end of the day, it’s pure business. Fighting me gives him the opportunity to change his life completely. I don’t want to give him that opportunity. He hasn’t played his cards right with me. I, in three years, will be 40 years old, I am a grown man. I’m not going to go through press conferences and verbal interchanges with him.
Questioned by reporters, Jon Jones said he understands why people are interested in and appreciate Aspinall’s fighting style.
– I know why Tom is an exciting guy. I understand that finally, after sixteen years, they have found someone who is definitely younger than me, is bigger in size, 30 pounds heavier and would challenge me. Everyone wants to see that. The question is what’s in it for me? Nothing, nothing will change if I beat him.
