Less than two weeks remain until the unification fight between Justin Gaethje and Ilia Topuria. Although not long ago it seemed that the men would be limited to the standard trash talk, now the conflict is clearly gaining steam. Indeed, “The Highlight” decided to attack his rival in a very personal way.
On June 14, the UFC Freedom 250 gala will feature one of the biggest fights of the year. Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje will face each other in a clash for the undisputed lightweight championship. Both are among the organization’s biggest stars today, and the stakes of the duel go far beyond the belt itself.
Throughout most of the promotion, the players remained relatively respectful of each other. However, the situation changed after the latest materials published by Topuria. “El Matador” posted a video styled as a funeral for all the rivals he defeated. Among them there was also a symbolic place for Gaethje, who, according to the champion, is expected to be the next name added to the list of victories.
An exchange with the American’s father also added fuel to the fire. When the latter referred to Topuria as “another lowly guy,” the Spaniard responded briefly:
– Fathers hope, masters know.
Gaethje moved to counterattack
It seems that the rival’s words have not gone unnoticed. In an interview with FOX News Australia, Justin Gaethje did not spare any harsh words against the UFC champion.
– This guy is one big pose. He calls himself a king. He acts like he is God. He is incredibly annoying. I can’t imagine sitting in the same room with him for half an hour and listening to him talk exclusively about himself.
However, he did not stop there.
– And let me just say this: I would have left him. I really would. I can’t imagine putting up with such things,” Gaethje said, referring to Topuria’s ended relationship with Giorgina Uzcategui.
For the American, the upcoming fight may be one of the most important in his entire career. Despite his many years at the top of the UFC, he has never managed to become the organization’s undisputed champion. He currently holds the interim belt again, and is well aware that another such opportunity may not come again.
Topuria, on the other hand, is looking much further ahead. After winning championship titles in two different weight classes, “El Matador” is openly talking about his next goals. His dream remains to fight Islam Makhachev for the welterweight belt and become a permanent part of UFC history.
However, before he can think about more records, he has to deal with Gaethje. And looking at the temperature of the exchanges between the fighters, one gets the impression that not only two champions will meet in the cage on June 14, but also two fighters who are hiding their mutual dislike less and less.
