Mateusz Gamrot assessed Ilia Topuria’s chances against Islam Makhachev. The Pole referred to the potential skirmish at the top of the lightweight division.
Mateusz Gamrot spoke on a possible fight between Islam Makhachev, the UFC lightweight champion, and Ilia Topuria a fighter who vacated the featherweight division championship belt to move higher and face bigger rivals than himself.
The Pole spoke briefly about this potential matchup during an interview with Mike Bohn of the MMAJunkie website. The Red Dragon and American Top Team representative is not opposed to the Georgian getting a title-shot.
– Topuria was the champion in the featherweight division, so maybe it would be fair. In my opinion, it would be an interesting fight, but Topuria is small. Islam is a big guy. I don’t think Topuria has a chance against him. If you want to fight Islam, you have to be big. Similar to him.
Ultimately, Matthew Gamrot believes that the deciding factor in the outcome of the fight will be the size of Islam Makhachev, who is quite a bit taller than Ilia Topuria and will also have an arm reach advantage on his side.
The question is whether this fight will ever happen, as both Khabib Nurmagomedov and Javier Mendez are opposed to Islam facing Topuria at this time.
