Mateusz Gamrot has commented for the first time on the announcement of his next UFC fight. The Polish fighter revealed his reaction to the name of his opponent and, in the process, made it clear that he is confident of victory.
On August 8, “Gamer” will face Quillan Salkilld in the main event of UFC Vegas 120. Both are among the top contenders in the lightweight division. The Polish fighter currently ranks 8th in the META rankings and 6th in the official UFC media rankings, while the Australian ranks 12th and 8th, respectively. At stake in this bout is not only the prestige associated with the main event but also a step toward the very top of the division.
Shortly after the fight was officially announced, Mateusz Gamrot posted on social media, emphasizing that he was happy to be returning to five-round bouts. It’s no secret that the two-time KSW champion feels most comfortable at this distance, and his excellent stamina often makes itself felt in the final rounds of his fights.
In an interview with Paweł Wyrobek of Polsat Sport, Polak admitted that the proposal to face the Australian had filled him with nothing but positive emotions.
– That was exactly my reaction. A smile spread across my face. I had somehow expected that our paths might cross, given how quickly he was climbing the rankings.
Although Salkilld is considered one of the most spectacular fighters of the younger generation, Gamrot believes that many fans misjudge his greatest strengths.
” He’s a good, tough opponent, and his fighting style suits me perfectly,” added the Polish fighter. “ A lot of people focus on his knockouts, but if you analyze his fights closely, you can see that he often looks to take the fight to the ground, where he feels most comfortable.”
The former KSW champion therefore expects a bout filled with wrestling exchanges and is convinced that it is precisely in those moments that he will have the greatest advantage over the Australian.
– It’s great that it’ll be five rounds. I expect him to try to take me down, so there’ll be a lot of action, a lot of scrambles, and I’ll have the chance to counter his attempts. I’m also glad he’s being hyped up so much as a young super-talent. It’ll be fun to nip him in the bud, ” concluded a confident “Gamer.”
Salkilld is currently considered one of the most promising fighters in the lightweight division, but Gamrot makes no secret of the fact that he intends to stop his rise up the rankings. For the Polish fighter, the main event in August will be a chance not only to score another valuable victory, but also to remind everyone that he still belongs among the world’s elite in the division.
