Max Holloway issued a statement addressing the fans and announcing the end of his featherweight competition. However, the Hawaiian does not intend to end his career.
Max Holloway had a chance at the UFC 308 gala to regain the featherweight category belt. Unfortunately, the fight with Ilia Topuria did not go the Hawaiian’s way and for the first time in his career Max lost by knockout. The former UFC champion in the up to 66 kilogram category gave himself a few days to think things over and recover.
Holloway released a lengthy video in which he addressed his fans. Max posted the video on his channel on the youtube platform. In a special statement, the Hawaiian conveyed that he is ending his adventure with fighting in the featherweight division.
– Maybe this will be the moment for me to be reborn like a phoenix from the ashes? We’re going up higher, we’re going to do bigger things. I am opening a new door, and at the same time opening another chapter of my career. Recently, the most questions from journalists and fans have been about starting in the featherweight category. Now I will answer them all for you.
– I think there is an end to this. Your peasant is getting older, unfortunately as humans we are not getting younger. I did 33 fights, this weight cutting was easy. However, it is affecting me negatively, not only the period of making weight during fight week itself, but also the time when I hold a lower weight before. I told you about this before during my preparation I could not eat ramen. I don’t intend to give up ramen ever again. Also, I am moving to the lightweight division and I intend to stay in it.
Max Holloway frankly stressed that he first intends to take a break and spend time with his wife and son, and then focus on training camp for the lightweight category fight.
– I won many championship fights in the featherweight category, I did great things, I will remember it well. It’s time for the next chapter, there are many nice fights to do in the lightweight division. But first I will rest, spend time with my wife, I owe it to her. We will travel.
Starting in the lightweight category is nothing new for Max Holloway. Blessed has already fought in this division against Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje, among others. In his fight with the latter he even reached for the BMF belt by knocking out his rival in the last second of the bout.
