Former UFC cock category champion Merab Dvalishvili has no doubt – Gina Carano can stir things up on her return to the cage. The Georgian had the opportunity to train with the pioneer of women’s MMA and admits that her form impressed him greatly.
Ronda Rousey will soon return to competition, donning MMA gloves again after nearly a decade off. After losses to Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes, many were convinced that her career was over. Unexpectedly, however, an offer to fight Carano emerged, bringing “Rowdy” back into the fold.
For Carano, it will be her first appearance since her clash with Cris Cyborg in 2009. The American has remained one of the most important figures in the history of women’s MMA over the years, paving the way for subsequent fighters.
Although it is Rousey who is considered the favorite – mainly because of her wrestling and experience at the highest level – not everyone shares this view.
“Will there be a surprise?” Dvalishvili delighted with Carano’s form
In an interview on The Ariel Helwani Show, Dvalishvili revealed that after training together, he has changed his outlook on the upcoming duel.
“It was an honor for me to train with her. I was surprised how good Gina is ,” he admitted.
“Ronda Rousey has a judo background, and so do I, but I think Gina Carano will win this fight. When she fought, I was very young and didn’t watch her fights. It was only after training that I checked out her fights and was impressed. She is a real fighter!”
The Georgian also stressed that Carano’s preparations could translate into a big surprise.
“It will make UFC fighters look bad, and even judo may suffer, but I think she will win. She trains really hard… I’ve seen how her body has changed and how her camp looks ,” he added.
Carano last won a professional bout in 2008, defeating Kelly Kobold. Dvalishvili, on the other hand, is targeting a return to the octagon later this year, where his next fight against Petr Yan is possible.
