Michael Chandler has named Mateusz Gamrot among possible rivals for Ilia Topuria following the Georgian’s move to the lightweight category.
Michael Chandler gave an extensive interview to The Schmo. During the conversation, the topic of Conor McGregor, whom the American intends to challenge to fight again after the UFC 314 gala in Miami, was not absent. Of course, the men also touched on other interesting issues, including Ilia Topuria ‘s move to the division above.
Michael Chandler similarly mentioned Mateusz Gamrot among potential rivals for Ilia Topuria, as did Kamaru Usman. Iron Mike did not remember Gamer ‘s exact position in the UFC rankings, but is aware that the Pole does not get a fight for a long time.
– There is Oliveira, there is, of course, Arman, there is Mateusz Gamrot and this situation of his. Is he in the Top 5? Top 6? (Gamrot is 8th in the rankings). Somehow. There is Dan Hooker, who withdrew from his fight with Gaethje with a broken arm. I don’t know.
Asked about the biggest fight involving Topuria, Chandler evidently pointed to a skirmish with Islam Makhachev for the lightweight division belt.
– I think the biggest fight they could make is a clash between the champion, even though he has vacated that belt, and the other champion, or Ilia and Islam. Probably business-wise it would make the most sense. Would Ilia deserve it the most out of all those involved? It’s hard to say, because the guy is moving up from a lower weight.
– He claims to weigh 190 pounds on a daily basis, but I don’t know if that’s true. I don’t think he’s as big as some of us at lightweight. However, the guy has great skills and, most importantly, he believes in himself.
Michael Chandler has finally mentioned Mateusz Gamrot again among the potential rivals of Ilia Topuria. The American seems to be convinced that one of the fighters from the Gamrot – Tsarukyan duo will be a suitable rival for the Georgian.
– So I don’t know. I could say match him up with Gamrot or Arman, who is more of a grappler than a striker. Or you could match him against Gaethje or Oliveira, who have great standup. It’s hard to say.
