Michael Chandler realizes that after his recent performances many fans don’t give him much of a chance before his next fight. However, the American is not going to be bothered by the opinions and argues that he will show his best version at the UFC Freedom 250 gala.
On June 14, the former Bellator champion will return to the octagon in a historic event held at the White House. The rival of “Iron” will be Mauricio Ruffy, who is regarded as one of the most interesting fighters of the younger generation in the lightweight category.
Chandler will enter this clash at an extremely difficult time in his career. Recent years have not gone his way. The American lost three consecutive fights, and two of those defeats ended before time. Meanwhile, his career has also been hampered by a long wait for a fight with Conor McGregor.
After his clash with Dustin Poirier, Chandler virtually disappeared from competition for two years, believing that the UFC would lead to his duel with the Irish superstar. Ultimately, the fight never happened, and “Iron” himself lost valuable time that he could have used to build his ranking.
Not surprisingly, ahead of UFC Freedom 250, many fans are betting on Ruffi and believe Chandler’s best years are behind him.
The interested party himself understands perfectly well the mood around him. In an interview with MMA Junkie , he admitted that looking at recent results, fans have every right to doubt his abilities.
– Looking at my last fight you have the right to believe that I have lost, that I will never become champion, that I have lost and am riding off into the sunset. You have the right to believe that I will go out there and get absolutely crushed by Mauricio Ruffy, and then you will never hear from me again. You have the right to believe that. You have the right to say that,” said Michael Chandler.
However, the former UFC belt contender assured that he does not intend to worry about the criticism. On the contrary, he treats it as additional motivation ahead of one of the most important fights in the last years of his career.
– I have no problem with that. Nevertheless, I believe that I will prove all these people wrong. I believe that on June 14 at the gala in front of the White House you will see me at my best ,” Chandler added.
For the American, a clash with Ruffy could be of great importance. Another defeat would put him even further away from his championship aspirations. A victory, on the other hand, could remind fans why he was listed among the most dangerous lightweight fighters in the world just a few years ago.
It remains to be seen in a few days whether Chandler will indeed silence the critics, or whether Mauricio Ruffy will add another valuable victory over a high-profile name to his record.
