Paddy Pimblett thinks back to his last fight and there is no doubt – he paid for his own ambitions. “The Baddy” admitted that it was ego that played a key role in his defeat at UFC 324.
In January, the Brit faced Justin Gaethje in a clash for the interim lightweight belt. Pimblett showed character, but for most of the duel he took heavy punches in the stand-up. He eventually lost by unanimous decision of the judges.
Pimblett beats his chest. “I wanted a war, not the implementation of a plan,” he says.
After time for analysis, “The Baddy” openly admitted that his approach to the fight was not right. In a video published on his YouTube channel, he revealed the backstory.
“To be honest, with the last fight, I think a little bit of my ego got in the way,” Pimblett said. “I wanted to knock him out. I wanted to strike with him and show everyone I could strike. I wanted a war. When you’re trying to take him down in the fifth round after he bludgeoned you at the end of the second, it’s quite hard. Back to fight IQ, back to the game plan, and not just swinging recklessly.”
The fighter has already begun preparations for his next appearance. Although the UFC has not yet announced his next opponent, the man himself has hinted that a clash with Benoit Saint Denis could happen in the summer. There are many indications that the Briton will appear during this year’s International Fight Week, where, according to media reports, Conor McGregor may also appear.
The defeat to Gaethje broke Pimblett’s nine-fight winning streak. One impressive victory, however, could get him back in the game for top targets in no time. There is also an unfinished story in the background with current lightweight champion Ilia Topuria. Will their paths cross in the octagon? That’s the question fans are still waiting for.
