Renan Barao former champion of the UFC organization has signed a contract with the GFL. The Brazilian has a very bad streak and it seems that this is his last chance to make a name for himself in serious MMA.

Renan Barao undoubtedly has put his best years behind him. The Brazilian was the champion of the UFC organization in the bantamweight category from 2012 to 2014. It is safe to say that Barao’s great career ended in 2017 with a loss to Aljamain Sterling.

After that, the Brazilian fought only against decidedly lesser-known rivals and lost fight after fight while having great problems filling the division’s limit up to 62 kilograms. Finally, after moving to the featherweight category and losing to Douglas Silva De Andrade in 2019, the popular Baron was released from the UFC.

Renan Barao then had several fights contracted, which for various reasons did not materialize. He eventually returned in December 2022 for an exhibition bout with Simao Peixoto, and in 2023 recorded a losing bout against Walter Zamora.

In 2024, Barao has not fought a single fight. Prospects for the new year seem better, as Renan Barao has signed a contract with the newly formed GFL organization. Such an experienced and well-known fighter could be a driving force for event promotions, especially if the Global Fight League decides to visit the coffee country.
