KSW is returning to a topic that has long remained on the sidelines. This time, however, there was no room for hesitation – the impulse came straight from the sport and was hard to ignore.
The XTB KSW 118 gala will feature a historic bout. Wiktoria Czyzewska and Sara Luzar-Smajić will fight for the championship belt of the women’s cockerel category, which will be the return of the female titles to the organization after a long break.
“There was no moment of hesitation.” Rysiewski on the introduction of a women’s belt
The backstory of the decision was revealed by Wojslaw Rysiewski in an interview with Michal Tuszynski on Fansport TV. As he stressed, it was Czyzewska, above all, who earned the division back to life:
– It was won by Victoria. From the beginning, I think our position was quite clear, that if we felt there was the right hero and additionally such pressure on us to bring this belt in, we would pull the trigger.
Rysiewski has no doubt that the young player has convinced the organization not only by her results, but by her overall attitude:
– Victoria herself won it with her punches, kicks, her media presence, the attractiveness of the fights. And it’s on her shoulders… Of course, hers and Sarah’s, depending on who wins, will depend on the continuation of the division. Building it around the championship belt.
There is a growing buzz around the clash. Sara Luzar-Smajić even suggested that it could be the biggest women’s fight in European MMA in recent years. KSW’s sports chief, however, is taking a more hands-off approach:
– I think it’s certainly one of the biggest developments in recent times. On the other hand, I don’t want to throw around bullish statements either. It is known that women’s MMA is not something we have been betting on lately, rather on selected fighters. We’ll see. Above all, this is a very, potentially, cool, impressive fight. Two uncommon characters. Beautiful women, great fighters. Well, what to want more? Also a fight for the belt… Here there wasn’t even a moment of our wondering if this fight should be so high on the card. Surely under different circumstances it could have been the main event of the gala, too.
One thing is certain – the outcome of this fight could set the future of the women’s division in KSW for months to come.
