Tom Aspinall appeared at the UFC 309 gala to watch Jon Jones’ fight with Stipe Miocic up close. The interim UFC champion learned from the American’s performance.
Tom Aspinall checked in in New York for the UFC 309 gala. On the occasion of the event, the Englishman also had the opportunity to meet with Dana Whit and Hunter Campbell to discuss future topics.
The interim UFC heavyweight champion, of course, appeared in one of the front rows at Saturday’s event. Aspinall posted a video on his youtube channel in which he shared his first impressions of the event in real time.
Of course, such an opportunity was also not missed by journalists from ESPN, the station that is the television partner of the UFC organization. Tom Aspinall gave them an interview after the gala.
– If I’m being totally honest, I wasn’t sure if Jon Jones would be able to finish Stipe before time. I thought he was going to keep Miocic at a distance and attack from a distance on his own without letting his punches reach him. I knew he would mix his attacks in different planes of the fight, all of which he did fantastically.
Tom Aspinall has learned his lesson from the Jon Jones fight. The interim champion said what will be most important in the clash with the American.
– The most important thing is to have good eyes, the right quick reactions to Jon’s movements. You have to have eyes around your head and react really fast. To be honest with great respect this is what the 42-year-old Stipe lacked today, at this age he just doesn’t have it anymore.
Tom Aspinall was delighted to sit near the octagon and savor the clash between two heavyweight stars.
– Previously, I had only seen Jon Jones fighting on the screen. Now I saw (his fight) live for the first time. It was impossible to sit closer anymore. I was literally at arm’s length from the UFC octagon.
– You yourselves know very well that this is something completely different from watching a fight on TV. I am overjoyed that I had the opportunity to see up close how 37-year-old Jon Jones presents himself in the last straight of his career. I am very satisfied. Jon’s speed is impressive, it’s his greatest asset.
