UFC 330: Mackenzie Dern’s Total Domination. Gillian Robertson Stands No Chance in the Title Fight

The UFC 330 co-main event and the strawweight title fight are now behind us. Mackenzie Dern defended her title against Gillian Robertson.

The American-Brazilian fighter fulfilled her dream in her 16th UFC bout. Mackenzie Dern didn’t give up after losses to Jessica Andrade and Amanda Lemos; following victories over Godinez and Ribas, she stepped into the ring for a shot at the vacant title. She defeated Virna Jandiroba over the full distance to claim the championship.

No one had any doubt that Weili Zhang would return to the title picture in the near future. However, before the Chinese fighter made her comeback, Gillian Robertson stepped into the title shot. The Canadian was heading into the Octagon on a six-fight winning streak. During that time, she knocked out two of her opponents, making the co-main event of UFC 330 a clash between a grappler and a striker.

UFC 330: Dern vs. Robertson — Who Won?

Round 1 – Dern started boldly with a flurry of punches, landing a left straight and following up with a right hook. Robertson attempted a takedown after countering a kick, but ended up in a guillotine choke. Dern escaped and returned to the center of the cage, where she continued her boxing combinations. The Canadian stubbornly kept looking for a takedown. The champion landed solid kicks with her lead leg, which, combined with two- or three-punch combinations, neutralized the challenger’s offense. Encouraged, Dern went for a powerful elbow, and another kickboxing combination led her to a takedown. With powerful strikes from above, Robertson threatened with a kick, so the champion transitioned to half-guard, where she began working toward a submission. Robertson curled up into a turtle position; Dern jumped onto her back and choked the Canadian mercilessly… but she held on until the bell!

Round 2 — Robertson took control of the center of the Octagon and responded more frequently to Dern’s attacks, but Dern took her down to the mat just 30 seconds in. The champion didn’t wait long and quickly moved to attempt a submission, focusing on a triangle choke. Robertson twisted, once again finding herself in a rear-naked choke position. Robertson escaped and ended up on top. Dern, using her BJJ, went for a leg, looking to apply a joint lock. Robertson defended with strikes, reminding the champion that this was an MMA fight, which made it difficult for Dern to pull her leg free. In the final seconds, Mackenzie transitioned to the mount, landing another heavy strike from above.

Round 3 – Dern took the initiative in the opening seconds, displaying excellent boxing. Robertson was unable to land a counterpunch, and her sporadic attacks were easy for Mackenzie to read. The Canadian absorbed a few punches and defended against a takedown attempt, landing a few more uppercuts to the champion’s jaw. Dern let go of the clinch against the cage and landed a beautiful right hook. Robertson pressed forward, but after a few more shots to the head, she slowed down. Dern incorporated middle kicks well into her offense, but she also began to take some dangerous punches to the jaw. After about a minute of attacks from both sides, the champion took the fight to the ground.

Round 4. — The champion opened the round with an aggressive combination of straight punches, incorporating a low kick. She immediately took Robertson down and jumped on her back. The Canadian defended against the choke attempt but had no room to twist free. Dern dominated the challenger, landing strike after strike to the face. Robertson didn’t remain passive, but she had to constantly guard against further choke attempts. Finally, the challenger twisted her body and landed an elbow… but Dern grabbed her arm! Mackenzie tried to pull off a balacha—to no avail.

Round 5 — Robertsonwent into the final round needing to knock out Dern before the bell. She had no chance of winning on points. The champion launched attacks with both her left and right hands, but the Canadian closed the distance and pinned her against the cage, from where she knocked Mackenzie to the canvas. The women traded blows, and the challenger landed an elbow from above. Robertson struggled to regain control for a long time, as she was still thinking about Dern’s submission attempts. Robertson picked up the pace with overhead strikes, raining hammerfists down on the champion’s face. The Canadian made a late surge in the final seconds, but the outcome was clear before it was even announced…

Result: Mackenzie Dern won by unanimous decision.
