Mateusz “Don Diego” Kubiszyn, the undisputed champion of the GROMDA organization, gave an interview to the federation’s website.
– I’ll never step into the ring for a unification bout against ZIOMUS, but who knows—maybe in the near future I’ll face off against ZIOMEK… Unless someone takes my championship belt from me first, which is unlikely, though, ” says Mateusz DON DIEGO Kubiszyn, the main attraction of the September GROMDA 26: POLISH COLOSSEUM event.

Editor: After a series of fights against fellow countrymen, would a match against a foreign opponent be the best option?
DON DIEGO: On the one hand, yes, but on the other hand, the federation’s owner, Mariusz Grabowski, tries to match opponents in a way that makes the fight interesting not only from a sporting perspective but also from a marketing perspective. Because today, a championship bout is also about the show and the excitement.
You’re active on social media. Who would fans like to see face off against DON DIEGO?
In private messages, people mostly mention HEAVYHEART, but there are also quite a few voices hoping for a rematch with SŁOMKA and a trilogy with BALOBOA. I’m pretty skeptical about rematches, because after all, I gave Bart Domalik a rematch and finished the job even faster than the first time. So the moral of the story is this: if a fighter doesn’t feel up to fighting for the championship, he shouldn’t take on such a match. And don’t expect a rematch right away; sometimes it’s better to wait patiently. Unless, of course, I lose first or leave GROMDY. But I’m not considering the first option.
Which Polish player has recently burst onto the scene and shown off his skills so impressively that you’d love to see him in action?
Overall, the level of competition is rising, and more and more fighters are gaining a better understanding of what bare-knuckle boxing is all about. But I’m the leader, and I’m not about to look over my shoulder. Let the competition keep their eyes on the leader and try to “nibble away” at him.
Who impressed you at the most recent GROMDY galas?
Of course, ZIOMUŚ, whom I prepared for the NITRO championship bout. But I’d also like to give a shout-out to LUTY. That was an absolute blast of a fight. In the ring, they showed the very essence of what GROMDA is all about—determination, technique, a game plan, resilience, and the ability to bounce back from tough moments. They still need to work on their marketing, though… As for the other fighters, I liked ZIOMEK, ZIOMUS’s brother, who knocked out the Englishman with a nice hook after coming down. If he keeps developing like this, a championship fight could happen in the near future. And that’s when things will get complicated, because while ZIOMUS and I are on the same team and help each other out as coaches—so we’ll never fight—with ZIOMEK, we’d have to approach it with common sense. In other words, we’re friends, we represent Rzeszów, but in the ring, we’re fighting for the belt!
Who at GROMDZ is trying the hardest to copy—or even imitate—Mateusz Kubiszyn? How do you rate his potential?
First and foremost, ZIOMUŚ—and that’s because we have the same head coach, Adrian Wardęga, and very similar fighting styles and striking techniques. I’ve noticed that SŁOMKA, BALBOA, SCARFACE, and others are also trying to copy me. They analyze DON DIEGO’s fights, but they don’t fully understand when and which move to use. My coach, ZIOMUS, and I have a strict breakdown of moves: preparatory, key, for the opening, in the center, against the ropes, etc. Meanwhile, my imitators execute them more randomly. I’m flattered that they’re learning from me—after all, who else should they learn from if not the master!
What’s more annoying about your rivals—their loudness and arrogance, or their confidence that isn’t backed up by the skill of a true fighter?
I focus on my own game, while of course keeping an eye on my opponent’s behavior. A guy like that might say all sorts of things, but then he puts even more pressure on himself. He brings it on himself, and then after a loss, he has a big problem with it. Because he promised the fans something, and in the end, not much came of it. For me, it’s the exact opposite—I’ll defend myself in the ring, but I don’t go overboard with the trash talk. Although if someone wants some tough talk, things will get intense in the fight.
How are your social media metrics looking?
I think it’s pretty cool… I have nearly 200,000 followers on Instagram, nearly 120,000 on Facebook, and over 100,000 on TikTok. Sometimes I’ll post something on YouTube, too. I think I’m doing pretty well in what’s called sports marketing, but that’s also because 80 percent of DON DIEGO is about Mateusz Kubiszyn. For a lot of people, it’s half and half, and that leads to a split personality—one side is their private life, and the other is their sports and media persona.
Since you helped ZIOMUSI and were in his corner, does that mean it’s payback time now, and Matusz Ziomek will be on Team DON DIEGO?
We help each other out. And we’ve been doing so even more since our coach, Adrian Wardęga, joined the core coaching staff of the Polish Olympic team. He’s away a lot for training camps, so we don’t see each other very often in the training hall. But when he is there, our collaboration works like this: I perform the exercises with half-centimeter precision—I could even do them with my eyes closed.
What’s a bigger motivation for winning in Gromda—”punishing” self-proclaimed gangsters or the money to be made?
That’s definitely a twisted ambition. I want to be the undisputed champion of bare-knuckle fighting, not just in GROMDZ, but all over the world. And I want to do it without any weight classes.
GROMDA also means real money. Are you already a wealthy person?
I haven’t built an empire yet, but I’m taking it step by step. I invest a little in real estate and a little in precious metals. I also invest in people I trust and believe will remain loyal to me in the future. The ability to choose such people is a special gift, and we’re referring to our excellent collaboration with Karol Miller.
